Why do law firm lose money on new associates?

My quest to understand the problem of why law firms are losing money on new associates started a year and a half ago.  I was meeting with a managing partner about his practice.  During that conversation, he mentioned that they were no longer hiring attorneys right out of law school because they calculated that the new attorney cost them more money than the income they would bring in during the first year.

Because of this conversation, I have paid attention to other firms over the past year who are struggling with the same problem and I have developed a theory on why new associates lose money.  Click on the link below and watch the video to learn about my theory.
